As a kid who grew up on the Hill in East Wheeling, I played with several kids who went to Cathedral and Wheeling Central Catholic: Names like the Voglers, the Dickmans, Jim Smith, the Churches, the Tontis, the Kudlas, the Menears, etc. And at one time or another from these guys I heard the name Jim Thomas mentioned – good stuff as I recall. I am sorry about the passing Jim and I wish all of Jim’s Family the very best.

Chief! You gave me a chance my sophomore year to play a game that I dearly love. You told me to take this opportunity and make yourself shine. The confidence you had in me not only as a football player but as a young man has meant the world to me. You told me to have faith in my ability in ever aspect of life. You said never give in. Be your best. I have lived by that motto. You always said your door was open whenever I needed to discuss a matter. You kept to your word. I am proud to had the chance to know you not as a coach but as person. Rest in peace!

DEAR PAULA & FAMILY: I WISH TO EXTEND MY SINCERE HEARTFELT SYMPATHY TO ALL OF YOU ON YOUR LOSS. IT IS TWICE AS HARD WHEN IT IS NOT EXPECTED. I KNOW MY HUSBAND WHO JUST PASSED AWAY IN FEBRUARY, DAVID “DIGGER” O’DELL WHO COACHED BASKETBALL AT JOHN MARSHALL, ALSO DIED UNEXPECTEDLY. I AM STILL IN SHOCK. HAD DAVE BEEN LIVING, HE WOULD CERTAINLY HAVE BEEN THERE TO PAY HIS RESPECTS TO JIM. THOSE COACHES STUCK TOGETHER. I KNOW DAVE HAD A LOT OF RESPECT FOR JIM. THEY WERE BOTH SUFFERING ALOT BUT TRIED NOT TO SHOW IT. NOW THEY ARE BOTH IN GOD’S HANDS AND NO LONGER SUFFERING. WHAT DO YOU BET THEY ARE UP THERE COACHING ALREADY? WE HAVE TO BE STRONG FOR THEM AND GO ON AS BEST WE CAN. CALL ME IF I CAN BE OF ANY HELP TO YOU IN ANYWAY. 845-5543.

Dear Thomas family,

I taught with Jim at Wheeling Park and thoroughly enjoyed his friendship. He always had a hello and friendly greeting and sometimes we exchanged our ideas about education. I left Wheeling Park in 2001 was a science teacher, but kept up with the sports happenings and of course always happy for his team victories and successes. He will certainly be missed and I am sad for the loss.

I first met Mr. Thomas when I had him for class at Wheeling Park, he was a great teacher. Later, I worked at Farm Fresh during college and he would always ask me how school was going and to keep up the good work. Recently, I was in Farm Fresh visiting and he came in. I was with my daughter and he was going on about how beautiful she was. Mr. Thomas was such a lovable guy with a great sense of humor. I still can’t believe he is gone, but I know god is enjoying his company! God Bless! Amy Lewis

I had the priviledge of playing for Coach Thomas in the 1976 OVAC All Star game and my son Jason had the same honor throughout his high school career at Wheeling Central and got to be a part of one of the coach’s State Champions 2000. He was a great motivator of young men and his integrity speaks for itself. I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to know him and feel like I have been touched by his compassion and enthusiasm not only in football, but also in life.

I’ll never forget our first conversation Coach. You lived up to your word and I’m forever grateful.

It gave me great joy to hear of the slew of state championships you captured in recent years. Those kids were simply receiving a bonus.

The thousands of us who were motivated by you on the football field or in the classroom all received the Gift, which came simply through being led by you.

It would be nice to hear you motivate us one more time with another of your pregame speeches.

It would be equally as satisfying to to hear you begin to sing “You’ll hear them cheer….”

But it would really be nice just to have taken the opportunity to have given you the proper thanks and let you know you how much you meant to me.

Mrs. Thomas, Tina, Nikki, JT and Dax , I just hope this message and the thousands of others you’ll receive reminds you of just how much this man meant to so many.

Mr. Thomas was one of the best most involved history teachers I ever had. I graduated park in 1997 – and I can remember all the great conversations and class discussions he was involved in with all in class. Everyone liked him. He called me Gardilly – a nickname from highschool that many remember me by. I loved Mr. Thomas and I will miss him. Loosing him and his presence here on earth is and will be hard, but knowing that he is at peace eases the pain.

Mr.Thomas was my freshman history teacher. when i had heard that he passed on friday, it hurt me. i went to see him at the showing on monday night. it hurt badly because mr. thiomas and i had alot of great times while living. he used to tease us to amuse and make us have fun while we concentrated on our school studies in his classroom. he was an awesome teacher and even more a great coach. i just wanted to let his family know i know how it feels to loose a loved one. i lost my mom in 2004. it does hurt and the greiving process never ends. but just think about the good times that you had with him because that all you have now. im sorry and i hope you all have a great summer with his loss. i will be thinking of all of you.

~he will be greatly missed at school and it wont be the same.

My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Thomas, Tina, Nikki, J.T., Dax, plus all extended family & friends. I know there is nothing I can say to make any of this any better. All I know is that I owe so much to Coach Thomas and the life skills that he taught me. Sacrifice, dedication, teamwork, integrity and high standards are just a few of the attributes Coach Thomas expressed to me. I am a better Father, Husband and Marine Officer because I have known you. Coach Thomas always had a way to make you think that he was always watching you and making sure you were doing the right thing. All anybody wanted to do was make him happy. Well Coach…I hope I have made you proud and I will surely miss you, but I know you will always be up there watching me. Thank you for the countless number of young men and women that you touched. God bless

sincerely,

My heart broke when I heard of the passing of Coach Thomas. I respect him more than any other coach I know. He always had time for me and his teams and staff helped us at Oak Glen beyond measure. His last words to me after our game last November were “We have all been where you are right now. Keep doing what you believe in.” Those words from a great man and coach like coach Thomas meant more to me than you could possibly know. Thank you Coach. May God bless and keep his family and friends in this time of grief.

Paula,Iwas saddened to hear of the loss of your husband”JT”. My brother Jon thought very highly of him and I’m sure he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.I was a freshman at Central when Jimmy was a senior and everyone had the utmost respect for him.It just occured to me that Jimmy was President of the Senior Class! Joey Thomas is a classmate of mine and I worked with Lou at the Warwood Kroger. Both my brother Jon and I coach varsity football ourselves and it is a wonderful calling.I can only imagine the number of young men “JT” touched and impacted in his career.I hope that fact can provide you with some solace in your grief.Take care, very truly Joe Basil

Still Near

My heart aches,

My soul cries,

My spirit lingers

As I dig through my mind,

Finding fond memories

I didn’t know were there,

All along I thought my feelings for him,

Were bare,

Just another teacher,

Just another friend,

I never stopped to realize

That life on Earth must End,

When thoughts of sadness all pass by,

Now we can see where true love lies,

with happiness,

with joy,

Not emptiness or sorrow,

He would have wanted us to live

Like there was no tomorrow,

I can almost hear him,

whisper in my ear,

Saying “Don’t worry, I am still near”,

So after all of us have shed our tears,

Let us live our lives,

Pressing forward,

With No fear,

Just like Mr. Thomas
