Mathews, James L., 82, of Wheeling, WV, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003.
He was born May 25, 1921 in Freedom, PA, a son of the late Jesse and Alice Garrison Matthews.
He served in the Army 70th InfantryTrailblazer Division during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star. The 70th Division soldier helped halt the German offensive known as Nordwind and recapture three key towns in France. The Trailblazers spear-headed the Seventh Army attack on Saarbrucken, Germany in 1945. The 70th Division offensive concluded with the meeting of the Seventh and Third Armies, ending 86 days of continuous combat contact with the enemy in France and Germany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harley and John Matthews; and two sisters, Jesse Lee Matthews and Alice "Snookie" Matthews Healy.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Gretz Matthews; a brother, Clarence "Pinky" Matthews of New York; a sister, Louise Hupp of Florida; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and many friends.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
