Hyman Guthwin, PhD
Virginia Beach – Hyman Guthwin, PhD, 95, passed away peacefully at home on July 12. He was born in New York City, graduated from NYU and was a long-time professor of Biology at Lehman College, City University of New York.
He was a man of many talents – scientist, teacher, painter, craftsman, stained glass artist, photographer, movie buff.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Helen; daughter, Judith Schachter Jean-Pierre; son, David Evelyn; and grandsons, Carl, Theodore, and Michael.
He was a long-time lover and supporter of the arts and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
Our heartfelt thanks to all for their kind and caring attention to our dear husband, father, and grandfather when he most needed it.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd in Virginia Beach. Following the service the family will welcome friends at 613 Blue Lake Ct in Virginia Beach from 4 to 7 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at altmeyer.com.
It is with sadness that I learned of Dr. Guthwin’s passing away. We go back a long way to when I was a freshman at NYU in 1955 and he was my lab instructor.
