Harvey S. Shadel

Virginia Beach – Harvey Silas Shadel passed away May 5, 2008 following an extended illness, and has been welcomed into the arms of his parents, Silas Gay and Grace Lindenmuth Shadel; sister, Beryl Lavas; and a host of family and friends who preceded him into the afterlife.

Born in PA, Harvey served honorably in the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years before finding his true calling, working for and retiring from the City of Virginia Beach as a landscaper and groundskeeper, bringing life to fruition where there was none and nuturing life to greater beauty where it was. He enjoyed camping with the CBC Club.

Harvey leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 51 years, Doris J. Freed Shadel; his son, Silas Gay Shadel; and his daughter, Corrine Alvey and her husband Joe, all of Virginia Beach. He also leaves behind his two grandchildren, Erin Rapach and her husband Scott of Woodbridge, VA, and Ryan Alvey of Virginia Beach; his brother, James Shadel and his wife Debra and their children of Harrisburg, PA; and many other family and friends who will miss him greatly.

A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd in Virginia Beach with Rev. Lee Diefenderfer officiating. A reception will follow the service in the chapel for the family to greet and receive friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alisa Guhl Memorial Education Fund, 2133 Weybridge Dr., Virginia Beach 23454, or to a charity of one’s choice. As a child growing up I can still remember all the great family events we had in the past with all us together.Uncle Harvey was always my favorite uncle. I just wish we could have spend more times together he always had a special way within himself to make me laugh and make me feel good about myself I sure miss Uncle Harv I am sorry that I didn’t show for any of his services It was to hard for me to peer the loss of another family member. As to this day I still feel the pain and dis-pair of losing a wonderful caring loving person in my life my mother. God Bless You All Love Always Jeff

I had the pleasure of working with Harvey in Landscape Services for many years. Harvey was a dedicated employee who loved his job and was friends with everyone he made contact with. I also would bump into Harvey and his wife at the Chesapeake Shriners oyster roast; always having a good time and always a smile.

Harvey, I’ll miss you. God bless to you and your family.

I worked with Harvey when our Landscape Services office was located at the Municipal Center in the old white house for more than 10 years. I later moved to one of our satellite offices but still talked with him now and then. He was a special man and I enjoyed talking and working with him. I remember when we had an employee hurt badly by a roto tiller and he literaly layed down on the asphalt and held her and sang “Amazing Grace” with her until the Rescue Square got to our site. He was one special man and the family should be very proud of him, he left his footprints in alot of peoples hearts, including mine. Rest in peace Harvey we will always keep you in our minds and our hearts.

We both were so blessed to have been able to work with Harvey for many years at Landscape Services. He was always there to lend an helping hand or listen to what you had to say, he would help in anyway he could.. Through out the years we became close friends with him and his beautiful family.. Harvey is gonna be missed by so many people.. He has his place in heaven looking down at all of us now.. I am sure he is going to make sure when the rest of us arrive that the gardens are going to be beautiful to receive us too! During hurricane Gloria we had to stay overnight at Landscape Services.. Harvey fell asleep back in the warehouse when all the lights went out, he awoke after a few minutes and saw a flashing light from one of the street signs, yelling fire, and walked slam into the wall! He made all of us laugh on such a long nite.. Him and his cup of coffee in hand, he was always someone you could depend on.. May God give you all the strength to get through this hard time, and cherish all the memories of such a great man!! We feel blessed to have known and work with Harvey and to be friends of such a great family!!Good bye my friend til we meet you again some day!!
