Newport News – Retired Army Staff Sergeant Hal Knife passed away November 18, 2008 after 82 years of life others can only dream of.
From his first job on a Texas oil-rig to 21 years of service in the Army Transportation Corps, to 20 years at BASF, Hal was devoted to each and every job as any man could be. Hal was proud that he was the first chief-engineer selected to be a member of the Army LARC program, and with the LARC program he traveled the world.
He helped form the first American Riot Squad in Japan and was a member of the “Polar Bear Club” stationed in Narsarssuak, Greenland .
At BASF he was, at one time, Union President and foreman of B-plant.
I was once told by Hal that there are two things a mans life can be measured by here on earth…. Is the World a better place for him having been here and what kind of legacy he leaves behind.
No doubt the world is a better place, a man of his word, a working man, a true and devoted husband of 62 years, a loving father, grand-pa and great grand-pa…
Yes the world is a better place.
As for the legacy,. I need only to look in the eyes of his cherished wife Linda Sue and his children Ben, Linda, Gary, Pamela, Bea and Warren. I look at the young faces of 8 grand children and 6 great-grand children and know his hopes and dreams of a great-grandson yet to be born and I know Hal’s legacy, a legacy any man would be proud of.
Hal is survived by three sisters in Missouri, Bea, Edna and Alice. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time as always.
Hal is preceded to his ever lasting reward by his mother and father…
Benjamin Harrison Knife and Beth May Branch-Knife and a son Niles Harrison Knife.
To a husband, father, grand-pa and great grand-pa, you are missed and will always be loved.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the Altmeyer Funeral Home – Denbigh Chapel. And funeral service will be held on Friday, November 21, 2008 at 12:00 noon with internment to follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens with full military honors
Arrangements are under the care of Altmeyer Funeral Home – Denbigh Chapel , 12893 Jefferson Ave , Newport News , VA. 23608
