Gladys Mary Bierkortte Hersey, 94, of Wheeling, died Saturday, May 2, 2015 in Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.
Gladys was born March 8, 1921 in Wheeling, a daughter of the late Henry and Eva M. Weitzel Bierkortte. She was a homemaker, member of Christian Mothers and a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, Wheeling and former member of Sacred Heart Church, Wheeling.
In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, George W. Hersey Sr.; son, William E. Hersey; five brothers, Henry, Herbert, John Ralph, Russell and Robert Bierkortte and two sisters, Evelyn Hohnsee and Lois Bierkortte.
Gladys is survived by her four children, George W. Hersey, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Hillsboro, Ohio, Patrick H. Hersey of Martins Ferry, Mary Louise Gordon and her husband, Mark of Triadelphia, and Donald T. Hersey of Wheeling; a sister, Clara DiClemente of Martins Ferry; brother, George Bierkortte and his wife Martha of Fountain Valley CA; thirteen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 4:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 6 at 10am at St. Joseph Cathedral, Wheeling, with Msgr. Thomas C. Petronek serving as celebrant. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.

SO SORRY TO HEAR OF THE LOSS OF GLADYS. SHE SURE WAS A VERY NICE LADY. WE SHARED MANY OF YEARS OF HOLIDAYS, AND A LOT OF FAMILY GATHERINGS. SHE WAS BLESSED WITH A GREAT FAMILY!!
