George W. Porter, Jr.
Chesapeake – George W. Buddy Porter, Jr. 88, passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2012. He was the son of the late George W. Porter, Sr and Thelma G. Porter, born November 16, 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Buddy was predeceased by his sister Thelma M. Waters and his beloved niece, Barbara Jackson. He enlisted in the Navy, December 1942 serving in the Asiatic Pacific including Iwo Jima and the Marshall Islands during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Warren. He was also a member of the Moose, Newport News Lodge 1119 since January 1974, where he was a Legionaire, Fellas, Past Govenor and a 25 Club Member. He retired from Wilkins Brewer Plumbing and Heating after 30 years of service. He is survived by his wife Shirley Parker Porter whom he adored; sister, Daisy Porter of CA; daughter, Tammy Mercer and her husband Charles Mercer of Newport, NC; step-son, Frank W. Parker, Jr. of Chesapeake; step-daughters, Kristy A. Andrews and her husband Kenneth Andrews of Chesapeake, Karen L. Hardison-Parker and her husband Daren Parker of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Brooke A. Hardison, Austin P. Hardison and Kellan G. Parker, all of Chesapeake; nieces, Shirley James of CA, Delores Edwards of NC; nephews, Pete Porter of CA, and Louis Jackson of VA. Buddy was known for his good nature, sense of humor as well as his unwavering love of family and friends. The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 4-6pm. Grave side service will be held at Rosewood Cemetery on Witchduck Rd, on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 1pm.
