CARROLL, George Edward Sr., 72, of Wheeling, W.Va., died March 21, 2008 in Wheeling Hospital, after a short illness.

Born the youngest of nine children on November 1, 1935 in Wheeling, George began working at WTRF-TV on October 1, 1952, before the station went on the air. As a junior in high school, it was George’s job to empty the trash, sweep the floor and run errands for the station managers. George continued to work at WTRF while earning a degree at West Virginia Northern Community College.

On August 18, 1956, George married another Wheeling native, Harlean Mathews, to whom he would be married for 51 years. That same year, George joined the U.S. Army and worked as a videographer.

When George returned from the Army in 1958, he also returned to his job at the station, this time as a cameraman, due to his experience in the armed services. One of his favorite parts of the job came each spring when he traveled to Bradenton, Fla., to film the Pittsburgh Pirates in spring training. Over the next nearly 40 years, he worked his way up the ranks of the newsroom, eventually being named Vice President of Operations. George retired from WTRF in 1997.

Surviving George are his wife, Harlean; his eight children, Kari Carroll Wardell and her husband of Charleston, George Carroll, Jr. of Wheeling, Christine McDermott and her husband of Wheeling, Theresa Thomas and her husband of St. Clairsville, Harley Carroll and his wife of North Potomac, Md., Mary Jo Keebler and her husband of Pittsburgh, Jack Carroll and his wife of Huntingtown, Md. and Clayton Carroll of Martins Ferry; and 14 grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 from 5-9 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 1 pm. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Family Services of Upper Ohio Valley, 51 11th Street, Wheeling, WV 26003.

I am so sorry to hear about George, I did not hear until today and was too late to come down for the services. I am working back in the valley at WTOV. George gave me my first job in television at WTRF and it has been my life time career. I hope Mary remembers me as we used to do “Young People’s World” with Eric Sherman.

To the Carroll family, So sorry to hear about your Dad. I worked with him at WTRF in the old building and new one. I was a young cameraman with no experience. He was so kind to me and always made work a fun and educational experience. My time there was brief, but your Dad made it a great time in my life. May your grief pass quickly. Chuck Redd

Where is Heaven?

Is it somewhere in outer space?

Where does my loved one now dwell…

In some far and distant place?

Heaven is all around you…

It’s as close as the air and love that surround you.

Heaven is everywhere…it’s not just in the skies,

It’s a spiritual dimension that can’t be seen through human eyes.

How do I know my loved one is safe?

How do I know they are well?

How do I know that they made it to Heaven?

Is there any way that I can tell?

Your loved one is well in heaven because they’re surrounded by God’s love and care, And I can promise you that they made it to

Heaven, because an angel guided them there!

Is there any way that I can tell them how much they meant and still mean to me?

I’m not sure how to contact them, do you know what Heaven’s address could be?

Just talk…and know that they hear you, Because you’ll never be truly apart;

And Heaven’s address? Well now, that’s simple…

Just send your thoughts care of your heart!
