ALTMEYER, George Edmund, 84, of Birch Avenue, Wheeling, died April 28, 2001, at home.
He was born Oct. 11, 1916, the son of the late James P. and Mary Hasenauer Altmeyer.
He was a graduate of Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science.
He was a retired co-owner of Altmeyer Funeral Homes of Ohio and Marshall counties, a former general chairman of the American Red Cross for the Ohio County Chapter, former president of the Serra Club of Wheeling, former chairman of the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, and a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling.
He was a former member of the West Virginia Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association and the Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry B. Altmeyer, Rev. Father James P. Altmeyer, John D. Altmeyer and Thomas Altmeyer; six sisters, Virginia Dei, Zita Shariley, Martha Blum, Jane Foose, Lillian Keeley, and Mary Ford. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Nau Altmeyer; three sons, George Edmund Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Toronto, Canada, Dr. Robert B. Altmeyer and his wife, Janie of Wheeling and Michael J. Altmeyer and his wife, Chris of Wheeling; eight grandchildren, Mark, Christopher and Michael, all of Toronto, Canada, Stewart E. of Austin, Texas, Wilson B. of New Orleans, La., Jennifer F., Sarah L., and Peterson J., all of Wheeling.
Friends received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff St., Wheeling. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling. Vigil services 3:30 p.m. Monday.
