Faye B. Bass, 72, of Virginia Beach, lost her battle with cancer and passed away on May 17, 2010, with her loving husband of almost 52 years by her side. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Sidney Bass; her daughters, Paula Garry Whitehurst of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Alyse Eric Williams of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina; and her son, Barry Pam Bass of Potomac, Maryland. She was a wonderful Bubby to her ten grandchildren. Faye was born in Richmond, Virginia, on January 2, 1938. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she met her husband, Sidney Bass, and they started a family. They moved the family to the Hampton Roads area in 1968 where Faye started a successful Shaklee business, selling nutritional and all-natural cleaning products…she was definitely ahead of her time. She returned to college late in life, receiving a B.S. in Food and Nutrition from Norfolk State University in 1992 and was a candidate for a Ph.D. in Nutrition from Virginia Tech University. Faye was an active member of Ohef Sholom Temple in Norfolk where she was studying to become an adult Bat Mitzvah. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16 at 10:00am at Ohef Sholom Temple. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Torah Restoration Fund at Ohef Sholom Temple, 530 Raleigh Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia 23507.

Dear Sid & Family,

I had thoughts of Faye quite a few days before she died and now I know why. It was a true pleasure to know her for what little time I did and she was an amazing lady. I always enjoyed her great knowledge, seeing her professionally dressed, and her happy smile. We had breakfast together one day at Panera bread and the sun was shining on us. I will always remember her fondly and I am very sad she’s gone. My prayers are for your comfort and the cure for cancer of any kind!!

In Sympathy,

Dana Beardsworth

Dear Sid and family: I was filled with sorry to learn of Faye’s passing. If you can recall, I knew you and her from the very erly Shaklee days long before Norfolk St… I was referred by Sandi Brittingham Lampl whom I am sure you remember. I used to come to your house to purchase my Shaklee products. I still have a Shaklee Magic Air spray bottle and every time I see it, I thought about you and Faye and I wondered if he had earned her doctorate which I was aware that she was working on. At the time we did Shaklee business, your daughters were just little girls and as I remember, they were into the arts; dance, etc. Faye had a wonderful personality and I will always remember her. Hope you are well.

Faye meant so much to everyone in the Torah Study Group, because although she was quiet and unassuming, she contributed a great deal. Perhaps the contribution we’ll remember most was her suggestion that people sign up in advance for the parshot. Her innovation, which continues to this day, caused the group to run more efficiently, and we will always be grateful to her for it.

Just two months ago Faye chanted at our Purimspiel. Cantor Wally had asked me to find five people from the Torah Study Group for the honor, and Faye didn’t hesitate. Her willingness to jump in gave me the confidence and assurance we all could do it, and we did. Faye was one of the five Purimspiel chanters, and she did the Torah Study Group proud!

I was so impressed with Faye’s contributions that I had asked her to be a member of the Adult Education Committee. Once again, her quiet assistance was an asset, and she was a joy to work with.

Our admiration for Faye, however, went beyond her work at the Temple. She was a role model as a wife, mother and proud grandmother. How blessed you were to have had a happy marriage for so many years. Roberto and I pray that you will be comforted by your memories.

Sid, I couldn’t believe my eyes this morning when I opened the paper and read about Faye. I had no idea she was ill. I am so sorry for your loss and for all of us whose lives she touched and educated about health and nutrition. I will never forget my skepticism about Shaklee vitamins and how she repeatedly met with me to convince me of their value. I think that was 1982. I have attributed my stamina and good health to Faye’s dedication and belief in her products. She was small in stature but man could she push to get her point across! I am grateful and I will miss her. Either she was unaware of her illness when we spoke last spring or she wanted to deal with it on her own terms. I could tell the two of you shared a very close loving marriage. She spoke to me about your travels to Israel and past and future walking of the rock and roll half marathon together. Life is so short and so fragile. I know you have a lifetime of memories to cherish. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
