EMMA ROOT

NORFOLK- Emma Magdalene Root, 94, passed away in Norfolk on May 5, 2015. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Kemper Jackson Gilbert and Mary M. Gilbert. She was predeceased by her son, two husbands and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Janice A. Root. Emma spent a lifetime in volunteer service to others. For many years she was president of the Newport Avenue A.A.R.P. She taught Sunday school to 3rd grade children for 35 years. Emma loved helping people, especially those down on their luck as well as protecting and caring for stray animals. Most of all she loved Jesus. She was always a hard worker and really made a difference in this world. We will miss her, but we know we will certainly see her again.

A graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Union Mission whose focus is providing help to those in need.

It was a beautiful memorial service remembering and honoring your mother. You will miss her terribly, but know that you were a wonderful daughter every day of her life.

Janice,

I knew your mother from Christ UMC although I had not seen her in a long time. My prayers are with you in the passing of your mom.

Shared many good times over the years in the same circles of UMW. She was a very caring person and loads of fun. She was a good mentor to me and always spoke of how much she loved to see my Mother, Nina Ellis & I together. Last time I saw you both was at a Little Theatre play in Portsmouth, I believe.
