Effie I. McMillan, age 85, of Newport News, died peacefully Sunday morning, September 14, 2008.
“Mom-ma” was born in Debusk, VA on June 11, 1923 to Baxter and Pearl Neece.
She married Claude McMillan on August 1, 1939. With him, she enjoyed making a home in the country of Southwestern Virginia where she raised her daughter and spent hours tending her gardens. Throughout her life she found joy as her plants and flowers thrived in her loving care. She laughed with childlike delight as she played with her great-grandchildren who sometimes referred to her as “their size”.
To treasure her memory, she leaves behind her daughter, Trula Burke and son-in-law, James Burke. She is survived by granddaughters Katherine Tully and her husband Charles, and Kristina Nikolopoulos and her husband Nikos; great-grandchildren Randi, Rikki, Rachael, Morgan, Karissa, Zoe and Drew; brother, Oscar Neece.
She is predeceased by her loving husband Claude McMillan, her parents Baxter and Pearl, sisters Glenna Kiser and Neva Neece and brothers Arby Neece and Carson Neece.
Services will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Denbigh Chapel on Tuesday, September 16 at 10 am. Viewing will be at the funeral home 1 hour prior to service. Interment will be at Peninsula Memorial Park after which family and friends will gather at her daughter’s home to fondly remember how she touched their lives. Her daughter wishes to express her gratitude to the staff of Coliseum Park Nursing Home for their loving care of her mom.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests your expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Cherished memories of the time spent with family will always be with us. Although our times together may have been short the memories are precious. When we meet again in Heaven our time apart now will be as though only a moment; with eternity together at the Throne of God.
Nothing can ever take away, The love a heart holds dear. Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
