Hearing of Duane’s death saddened me as I know it saddens everyone who has ever worked with him or whose life he has ever touched. He had so many wonderful qualities about him that made working with him a pleasure and always made the time full of laughter and learning for the staff and the kids. I know CHKD will never be the same without him. He taught me much and for that I am truly thankful that he touched my life. May God bless him and his family.

This morning seeing the paper reporting Duane’s death has brought great sorrow to me. To all who loved Duane, please accept my heartfelt sympathies. For many years we worked together in the ER at CHKD. His humor, kindness, and his excellent professional abilities made him a gem to work with. Duane was wonderful with the children and touched many lives. I’m sorry to say I’ll be out of state and miss his service. Please know my thoughts are with you. Jan Huss RN

To the entire Smith Family, may your memories bring you much comfort. I’m sorry for your loss may god be with you in your time of need. I didn’t know Duane Jr that well, only that he loved hunting with his dad here at Cedar Mountain. I will never forget the countless times that he and his dad would come out of the woods with deer piled on the four-wheeler front and back, day after day and the smile on both of their faces. He will greatly be missed!

We are very sorry to hear of the loss of Duane. He was a great man and always spoke fondly of his family and co-workers. Duane was also the first person I met that nervous day 1 of rookie school. He was an inspiration having earned his Paramedic and R.N.. Know he won’t be forgotten. Rest in peace brother.
