Dr. Gary Micheal Browning, age 51, peacefully passed away in Norfolk, Virginia on September 9, 2009.

Dr. Browning, a local OB/GYN with Tidewater Physicians for Women, was born in Cynthiana, Kentucky. He was a 1976 graduate of Bullitt Central High School in Shepherdsville, KY. Dr. Browning graduated with a B.S. from Morehead State University, in Morehead, KY in 1980 and followed that with his medical degree in 1984 from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, in Lexington, KY. In 1988, he completed his internship and obstetrics and gynecology residency in Norfolk, VA at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He began his full-time medical career that same year with Tidewater Physicians for Women in the Norfolk region and he served his beloved patients there until his illness forced his recent retirement from the practice.

Dr. Browning was a fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the North American Menopause Society, the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine, the Virginia Medical Association and the Virginia OB-GYN Medical Society. He was appointed as a Clinical Instructor at the Eastern Virginia College of Medicine.

He is survived by his partner, “pep” Jose Manuel Dominguez Lopez, of Barcelona, Spain; his father, Larry Cason Browning, of Cynthiana, KY; his mother, Glenda Sue Hehr Browning, of Chesapeake, VA; his paternal grandmother, Edith Wells Browning, of Cynthiana, KY; his sister, Debra B. Lybrand and her husband, Charles W. Lybrand, both of Chesapeake, VA; his nephew, Douglas Cason Street, of Chesapeake, VA; his great-niece, Rebekah Nicole Street, of Lexington, SC; and his great-nephew, Chance Cason Street, also of Lexington, SC. He is also survived by his faithful and dedicated companion of 17 years, his Siamese cat, Tico.

Dr. Browning loved to travel and visited multiple continents and countries throughout his adventurous trips each year. At the time of his death, he had visited every continent except Antarctica. His most recent travels included time in Australia, an extended visit to Spain and a sojourn to Hawaii. He had planned to live abroad after retirement. His passport was a testament of his love of travel with its various and colorful visas and international stamps. Dr. Browning collected many artifacts on his travels and shared unique and thoughtful gifts with his family and friends upon each return. From riding camels, zip-lining, and whitewater rafting to hot air ballooning, Dr. Browning always looked forward to his journeys and returned with wonderful and entertaining stories about his travels.

A celebration of Dr. Browning’s life will be held in Norfolk, VA at The Town Point Club on Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 2:00PM – 4:00PM. As a employee of Tidewater Physician’s for Women for many years I enjoyed knowing and working with Dr. Browning. Our hearts were broken when we heard of his illness. It just did not seem possible it could be true. It still does not seem real. There will only be one Dr. Browning and we have been blessed to know him and love him. I would like to thank the family for letting us say good bye to Dr. Browning. We will all miss him so very much.

Debbie,

I met Gary 22 years ago when he was a resident at Norfolk General. He was truly one of the brightest physicians I ever called on! He bedside manner was the best! I never had a conversation with Dr. Browning that did not include you. He always talked about you! He simply adored you! What a gift to have had him in all of our lives!

Dr. Browning has not been in my life as long as he has been in the lives of many…but he made a tremendous impact on my life, and when I heard of his illness my heart wept for him and his family and friends, and for all of his other patients who like myself were losing one of the last great and compassionate physicians left in this world. I not only lost a Dr. but a real friend with Dr. Browning’s passing, and I pray God will be with all of his family, friends, and patients, during this time of mourning. God Bless you Dr. Browning and thank you for touching my life you will be greatly missed.

Few months ago when I received the letter from Dr Browning informing me of his illness and retirment from his practice I was extremely saddened to know that he was suffering a terrible illness, and often since then my thoughts and prayers were with him and his family. How touching it is that he took time to write to each of his patience to say good bye. Surely this is the gesture of a very kind and caring person. I am honored to have received an invitation to attend the celebration of his life, next Saturday. My deepest expressions of condoleances to his parents and family. How sad for them to have to live through the morning of their dearest son. My heart goes to them.

I had the pleasure and honor of working with Dr. Browning for the past 20 years at Tidewater Physicians for Women. He had a brilliant mind, a zest for travel, and soft spot in his heart for others. He was diversely knowledgeable on every subject – not only medicine. He was always available whenever you needed him – whether it was to consult him about a trip you were planning or about a loved one’s health and medical treatments they were receiving. Even though he is now free from his pain and suffering, it is still hard to accept the loss of him. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve him and I will truly miss him. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

My love and deepest sympathy goes out to his family – Sue, Debbie, and Pep.

I have known Gary since his second year of residency at Norfolk General now Sentara as I was the Wyeth representative who called on him both then and after he entered private practice. He was a wonderful man and OBGYN and, as others have said, left us far too soon. He will be missed both as a physician and as a friend. My condolences to his partner and to his family.

I was a classmate of Gary’s at UK College of Medicine. I remember how he went out of his way to show me the ropes when I followed him in rotation through our clinical and surgical rotations in our third year of medical school. He was always kind, always caring and always fun to be around.

I was a patient of Dr. Brownings many years ago as a teenager. I remember him as joyful and gentle Doctor who spoke with kind and compassionate words. He was the first physician to convince me to trust in the healing power of the human body…and I have been doing so ever since. Dr. Brownings bright light, spirit, and kindness have made such an impact. He will be missed.

My heartfelt condolences go to Dr. Browning’s family. He was my physician for almost 20 years at TPW and I so greatly appreciated his knowledge and kindness, his wit and his expertise. Although I had hoped for a different outcome in his illness, I am confident that his soul lives on with Our Lord amongst the heavenly hosts. May the fact that he was so highly regarded and will be so greatly missed be of comfort to you in this time of sorrow. I am having 2 memorial Masses said for him at the parish in Chesapeake which I attend when I am in Tidewater. May he rest in peace.
