Dorothy Schewizer was one special, one of a kind lady.

There was something truly wonderful about her.

She had a way of always making everyone around her feel special and loved.

It did not matter if they were her family or not. Neighborhood kids, visiting priests, or anyone else who needed a place to stay and eat a good meal was always welcome.

As a matter of fact, if you did not eat a meal when you were at her house she seemed offended.

You would think that a lady with 9 kids, 22 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren would have a hard time making all of her family feel loved, but that was not the case.

She had a way of making everyone around her feel important and loved by her. She showed her love by sending cards for birthdays and anniversaries, showing up at a game or band concert, cooking a special meal, and always putting forth the extra effort to make things special.

Her greatness shows up in her family. We all have our imperfections, but inside every Schweizer has been taught compassion, forgiveness, kindness, loyalty, and charity. When one Schweizer is down, someone in the family steps up to help in one way or another. I was never more proud of the Schweizer family than these last few weeks. It is terrible times that show the character of this family. With all of the stress and pain, there was much tolerance. Everyone seemed to put the needs of their brother, sister, or gram first before their own. This is what she has taught us. She taught us to help and love one and other.

She was one Strong lady. Growing up during the Great Depression taught her how to stretch a dollar and live well without a lot of money. She could travel the country on a shoestring budget, with a station wagon packed full of kids and coolers. And she was talented enough to cook a hot meal in a hotel room, I will never forget those cans of Spaghetti O’s warmed up in the sink!

Her service in the Navy during World War II showed her commitment to her country. She was a brave woman and not afraid to stand up for what she believed in.

She would travel the world to see her family. When her health allowed, it was nothing for her to hop a flight to Vegas, California, Boston, Texas, and even Australia. She always did her best to make sure she was there for special occasions. And when she showed up she was the life of the party, dressed to kill in her party dress and fancy high heels. She always had a good joke or an ornery remark that would make even a Marine blush.

She loved my pap and has missed him since he passed. I loved to hear them singing together to cassettes in the old station wagon, or tapping their feet to a drum and bugle corps, or yelling at the TV during a Notre Dame game. Her life revolved around her husband and her family and now she will be watching all of us from heaven and dancing “Cheek to Cheek” with pap.

We all love and miss you so much Gram. You were beautiful in every way and one of a kind.

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Dorothy was my supervisor at MSBCBS when I started long ago and I just loved her. It didn’t take long to realize we also were connected by the musician picnics in elm grove where as a child I thought she and your father were awsome…….they made the sawdust pile and everything, even more fun. My father Jim Edgell, was the member. I will always have a place in my heart for her. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

To the Schweizer family and especially to Jeanne, Tony, Melissa, Angela, Andrew and David,

We were saddened by what you and your family endured these past weeks and with the passing of your Mother. You have been in our prayers and will remain in them during this time of grief. But we must remember, that she is now at a more beautiful place then she has ever been and rejoined with others she loved as well as us here on earth. We love you, Larry and Lillian
