Cheri lived several places as an adult, but ultimately seemed to consider Shadyside home. She did many things as a pioneering broadcast journalist, educator and artist that brought credit to her hometown. Thanks to the folks who helped me find her for a farewell visit. Her light shines on.

Dear Family,

I am just learning of Cheri’s death after sending 2 Christmas cards last year and this year. The card this year came back marked “deceased.” I was shocked and so sad. I did not know she was ill; but knew I had not heard from her in a while and we always talked. I also tried to call her several times but the phone was disconnected. I am grateful to the Post Office of notifying me she was gone. I worked with Cherie at Coppin State College during my 1 year tenure as a Visiting Professor and we stayed in touch over the years.

I wish her the best and many great blessings! She has the victory and will be the shining star in heaven.

My sincere best wishes to Cherie and the family.

Dear Janice,

Don’t know if you will remember me. Just wanted to share my sympathy at the passing of Cheryl. We were in Kindergarten together and my mother used to babysit both you and Cheryl. I remember coming with her often and sharing a bowl of Cheerios before bedtime. God bless you and may Cheryl find peace and rest in God’s loving care.

I am one of the Liza’s Place hospice volunteers. So sorry of your sister passing. I sat with Cheryl on the Monday of her passing. I held held her hand and talked to her. I believe she knew I was there sitting in the room. I also said some prayers. I wish I could have had the chance to know her. You and your family have my deepest condolences of your lost. May God be with all of you.

I am so saddened to learn of Cheryl’s passing. I have such fond memories of our friendship, especially before high school. I remember spending time exploring the “crick.” And I will always be indebted to her for introducing to me what is still my favorite sandwich – cream cheese and green olives! I too spent a career as an educator and applaud her success in that field. So long, Cheryl.

Janice,

So sorry to hear about Cheryl.I remember you both fondly from Shadyside. My mom married your dad’s uncle Lewis Bruney in 1961, and I moved and didn’t see much of you girls over the years.Your mom worked with my sister Luella Yates at F&M Bank for years, and Luella passed away at Liza’s Place on Oct 3rd. Her memorial service will also be Oct 15 in Shadyside at the Methodist Church. I guess we will have to say a little prayer for each other that day.To lose a sister is to lose your lifelong best friend.

Peace and prayers to all your family.

May God take Cheryl into his loving arms and welcome her home… and may God give peace and comfort to those friends who were there for her when she needed them most.

Oh, how I miss Cheri! I miss her quirky ideas, her ready laugh, her encouraging support, her willingness to take the path less traveled. We were close friends for almost 40 years — from Ohio to New York to Maryland — and I’m sorry I wasn’t with her at the end. But I know she considers it just a beginning!

Sorry for her passing. She was a good neighbor. We just knew her when she moved back to Shadyside. It was nice to stop and talk to her in the evenings while out walking. She and I loved our cats!

To Cheryl’s family and close friends, you have all our sympathy at Cheryl’s passing. Cheryl and I sat next to each other through grade school and high school, and I thought of her like a sister as a result. I’ll remember her for her quiet way, thoughtfullness and intellect. Sincerely, Keith and Pat Mazur.
