Charles P. Riesbeck, Jr., 72, of Gahanna, Ohio, formerly of St. Clairsville, Ohio and Hamden, Conn., died December 26, 2006 in Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
He was born April 11, 1934, in Wheeling, WV., the son of the late Charles P. Riesbeck, Sr. and Beatrice Cline Riesbeck.
He graduated from St. John Central High School, Bellaire, Ohio and attended the University of Dayton and Cornell University.
Charles retired from his position as Supreme Secretary of the Knights of Columbus, New Haven, Conn., in 2001. He was most recently the corporate secretary of Riesbeck Food Markets, Inc., St. Clairsville.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline M. Donathan, and his brother, John M. Riesbeck.
Charles is survivied by his wife of 53 years, Anne E. McCort; and seven children, Judith A, John Wright and Deborah R. Hanson of St. Clairsville, Charles M. Melody Riesbeck , of Bellaire, Robert J. Lynda Riesbeck of Irvine, CA., Rebecca A. Raymond Wetmore of Hamden, James C. Molly Riesbeck of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Kathleen M. Dave Burgan of Blacklick, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was a member of St. Matthew the Apostle Church, Gahanna, and a longtime member of St. Mary’s Church, St. Clairsville, Ohio.
Charles was elected Supreme Secretary of the Knights of Columbus in 1984. He was a charter member of Our Lady Of Peace Council 4243, St. Clairsville, where he served as Grand Knight in 1965. He was also a Sir Knight of the Jack Barry Fourth Degree Assembly in Bellaire. He served the Ohio States Council of the Knights of Columbus as Warden Advocate, Treasurer, Secretary, and State Deputy. He continued to serve on the Supreme Council as a Special Consultant to the Supreme Knight until his death.
In 1985, Charles received the Papal honor of Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great from His Holiness Pope John Paul II.In 2001, he was inducted into the Knights of the order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem.
He was past president and general manager of Riesbeck Food Markets, Inc., and past president of the Ohio Retail Food Dealers Association.
He previously served as a Director of Citizen National Bank; President of St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce; and a member of St. Clairsville City Council.
The family will receive friends Thursday Thursday, December 28, 2006, from 1-4 and 6-9 PM, at the Beck-Altmeyer Funeral Home & Crematry, 204 West Main Street, St. Clairsville, Ohio 43950. Vigil services will be held at 6 PM.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 29, 2006 at Noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clairsville, Ohio, by longtime friend, Monsignor George R. Coyne.
Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.
