VIRGINIA BEACH – Betty G. Floyd, 73, of Todd Street, passed away in her home on April 8, 2008. A native of Norfolk, Betty was the only child of Luther D. Gillikin and Elizabeth Whitfield Gillikin.

A graduate of Maury High School Betty was attending the Norfolk Division of W&M and VPI when she traded college life to become the wife of an Army Officer. Married to now retired Brig. General Philip A. Floyd, she raised two wonderful sons S. Craig Floyd of Derwood, MD and Kevin A. Floyd of Virginia Beach.

A lifelong Methodist, Betty served as Supt. of Sunday Schools and taught children as part of her many responsibilities at Aldersgate UMC, Norfolk. She was a 20 year volunteer of Sentara Leigh and Norfolk General Hospitals and was a past president of the Auxiliary to Sentara Hospital, Norfolk.

Prior to her illness, Betty traveled extensively with her husband and friends, was an avid reader and a 48 year member of the Carolanne Farms Bridge Club.

Most of all, Betty reveled in her four grandchildren – Lindsay and Allison Floyd of Derwood, MD, and John and Melissa Floyd of Virginia Beach. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by daughter-in-law Michele Z. Floyd of Virginia Beach, and soon-to-be daughter-in-law Lori Palmer of Bethesda, MD.

Arrangements are being handled by Altmeyer Funeral Home of Va. Beach. There will be a memorial service conducted by Rev. Reginald Burgess, PHD at Aldersgate United Methodist Church located at 5767 Sellger Drive Norfolk at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday April 12 followed by a reception with the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Aldersgate UMC or other charities will be appreciated. Condolences can also be made at altmeyer.com.

Dear Phil,

I am so very sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. I was the flower girl in your wedding all those many years ago. I remember the two of you very fondly. I know that you miss her very much. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My mother Shirley told me of the passing of Betty. My family sends our deepest condolences to you and your loving family. John and Melissa always spoke of her when I was in town visiting. They loved her deeply and will miss her as we all will.

Phil: Marcella Pugh called to advise me of your loss. I have many fine memories of our then young group at McKendree Methodist church. Mostly, I remember Betty’s warm, easygoing way with people. I also remember that she had one of the nastiest cats I ever saw. My thoughts and prayers to you and the family. Winston
