Avelino Gelico

Virginia Beach – Avelino Delos Reyes Gelico, 83, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2008, surrounded by his family and friends. Born in the Philipines, he was the son of the late Eugenio and Victoria Gelico. Avelino was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He retired from the U. S. Navy after 30 years of loyal and dedicated service. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Joan S. Gelico.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Ninda Dajani and her husband Zouhair, Gina Gelico Leach and her husband Jimmy, Avelino D. Gelico, Jr. and his wife Donna, Stephanie Gelico Ballengee and her husband Rich, and Brett Shane Gelico, all of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren, Victoria Segar, Mathew Leach, Patrick Leach, Nicole Ballengee, Nicholas Powell, Lee Ballengee, and Merbeth Dajani; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Corazon Gelico; three brothers, Marcelino Gelico, Celestino Gelico, and Benito Gelico; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and his devoted caregiver, LaRose Goffigan. He was preceded in death by his sister, Pontenciana Gelico.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd in Virginia Beach. A reception at the funeral home will follow the committal service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends during a visitation and reception from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sentara Hospice Program.
