Audrey Joan McCarthy

Norfolk – Audrey Joan McCarthy, 77, daughter of the late Mary and Joseph Zimmerman of Buffalo, NY, went to be with the Lord July 5, 2008.

Audrey became a professional baton twirler at the age of 9 when she joined the Ted Lewis Show, touring the country’s night clubs, theaters, and stadiums, such as Chicago’s Soldier Field.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 57 years, Charles Edward McCarthy; four children, Colleen McCarthy, Kyle Stewart Robin, Kevin McCarthy Karen, all of Virginia Beach, and Pat McCarthy Janna of Chesapeake; her sister, Dorothy Hill of Virginia Beach; sister-in-law, Marion Hilditch of Duncan, SC; and twelve grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lenore Blair of Tallahassee, FL.

Family and friends will always remember her endless energy and generous heart.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, is handling the arrangements. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

All non-military guests who wish to attend the funeral mass must contact Altmeyer Funeral Home at 422-4000 to be placed on a list of attendees for security allowing entrance to the base. Condolences may be offered to the family at altmeyer.com.

Dear Grandpa, Dad, & the rest of the family,

I just want to say a few words that I wrote about our beloved grandmother,

Our Grandmother

She possessed dignity and pride

And truly walked in beauty.

Had a kind word for everyone she knew,

taking a genuine interest in each person she encountered.

She had many friends, but no enemies.

That was grandma.

Her family was her pleasure in life.

She loved to cook,

and dance,

and sing,

and touch babiesâÄô faces.

She was a giver, but rarely a taker.

That was grandma.

She possessed strength and courage,

gave good advice

but never meddled.

She harbored secrets we will never know

and suffered in silence many times

facing lifeâÄôs trials with determination.

Yet, she always remained beautiful.

The stresses of life did not seem to touch her

and if they did, it never showed.

That was grandma.

She decorated all of our lives with her beauty,

her patience,

her love.

Her presence demanded respect from those around her.

She had a sense of humor

and her laughter was a joyous sound.

Her face was like an angel,

soft and beautiful.

That was grandma.

She was a rare human being

and I am proud to have known her

and have had her in my life.

She was one of my greatest teachers.

She has been here all of our lives,

so not having her with us now seems unnatural.

But in our hearts she will live forever.

If I could describe love,

It would be she,

it IS grandma.

Dearest Uncle Charles, Colleen and all my dear family. We are sending you our deepest sympathy in the loss of Aunt Audrey. We will miss her very much, her smile and laughter, her humor, spirit and strength. We have wonderful memories of a wonderful dear lady who gave so much to all of us. If I could be there I would but I am unable to make the trip because of Ed’s Mom. Please know that you are in our hearts and prayers always. God has taken her home in peace. Love, Helen, Ed, Steve, Jonnie and Martin Bielicki

Grandma,

What can I say about you that I dont live everyday. You were the rock of this family and the laughter that kept us all alive! You were always the party planner, the coordinater of family trips and the face I looked for in the front row of every performance I had! My heart ached everyday that you were in pain and it aches everytime I take a breath. I know you are here with me now, I can feel you protecting me from the pain that distracts me from singing, and I know you are here beside my every time I step up on the stage! You were my inspiration and the wind that carried my dreams. I love you so much and I know that where you are there is no pain and you will continue to love us and protects us in our lives. I keep you with me everywhere I go. I love you Grandma, you taught us to follow our dreams and to be strong, and nothing will keep me from doing that because you are here with me! I miss you so much.

Your Erin
